An S/MIME certificate is a digital identity that contains information about the owner of the certificate, such as name and email address, as well as a public key that is used to encrypt messages and verify signatures. It is issued by a trusted certification authority (CA) that has verified the identity of the certificate holder.

According to the current status, the certificate holder is authenticated by the existing employment relationship with Landshut University of Applied Sciences. Further identity checks are not necessary. (Compare: https://doku.tid.dfn.de/de:dfnpki:tcs:usercert#identifizierung_und_dokumentation).

Why might you need a certificate?

Emails are sent by mail programmes in plain text. At any of the numerous nodes on their way to the recipient, someone could read or change this email and change its meaning. Email signature certificates, so-called SMIME certificates, offer protection here.

Landshut University of Applied Sciences recommends that all employees apply for a certificate and install it in their email client.
