An S/MIME certificate is a digital identity that contains information about the certificate holder, such as their name and email address, as well as a public key used to encrypt messages and verify signatures. It is issued by a trusted certification authority (CA) that has verified the identity of the certificate holder.

The certificate holder is currently authenticated through their existing employment relationship with Landshut University of Applied Sciences. No further identity checks are required. (See also: https://doku.tid.dfn.de/de:dfnpki:tcs:usercert#identifizierung_und_dokumentation).

Why might you need a certificate?

Emails are sent in plain text by email programmes. At any of the numerous nodes along their route to the recipient, someone could read or alter the email and distort its meaning. Email signature certificates, known as SMIME certificates, offer protection here.

Landshut University of Applied Sciences recommends that all staff apply for a certificate and to install it in your email client .
